Here is the usual story. You buy a duffel because duffels are what gyms sell. It has one big hole in the middle. Trainers go in, kit goes in, towel goes in, and by Thursday the whole thing smells like a changing room. You cannot carry a laptop in it without worrying. You cannot wear it comfortably on a bike. For routine cleaning, a damp cloth and a little mild soap does almost everything. Work on the spot, rinse the cloth, go over it again to lift the soap. Leave every compartment open to air dry, away from radiators and direct sun.
Twice a year, turn the bag out completely and shake the grit from the shoe compartment. Grit in the zip teeth is the main reason bag zips fail. A soft brush along the zip track takes thirty seconds and adds years.
If the bag gets properly soaked, dry it open and upright rather than flat, so water drains out instead of pooling in the base.
